BOOK REVIEW - INTO THE WATER - RUTH SUSAN JOSEPH

Book review

“Into the Water” is a fictional novel by Paula Hawkins, a British author. It is her second full-length thriller after the successful “The Girl On the Train”, and the story is almost equally as captivating.
“Into the Water” is a book written from the first-person POV of several different people, each which gives a new perspective to the story. It follows the events that took place in a little town called Beckford, after the apparent suicide of a woman, who seemed to have drowned herself. The book follows the emotions of her sister and her teenage daughter, as well as the thoughts and fears of the police and other inhabitants of Beckford. It delves into past suicides and draws a clear line of connection between events that seem distinctly separate. It deals with human emotion and reaction, and the lengths that people will go to save themselves and their family. It speaks of the struggle of unhappiness and mistrust, as well as the constant need to maintain appearance and reputation. The book is truly a work of art.
As a thriller, it has a constant air of mystery that remains a clear undertone until the very last sentence of the book, wherein all confusion is clarified. Paula Hawkins has taken one event and made it several different stories, several different perspectives, and one huge mystery. The entire book will thrill you to your core and it is a book that cannot be put down until you’ve read the whole story. I would definitely recommend it as a read to anyone who loves fiction and is looking for something interestingly new.
