RANDAMOOZHAM
M T VASUDEVAN NAIR
Randamoozham is the retelling of the Mahabharata through the eyes of Bhima, the second Pandava. Written in Malayalam by M T Vasudevan Nair, the book has been translated into English and is currently being made into a movie. This work, which was first published in 1984, won the Vayalar Award for the best literary work in Malayalam of the year. It also won the Muttathu Varkey Award in 1994. Krishna and Arjuna are the heroes of popular Mahabharata. In Randamoozham, it is a different story. The story mainly focuses thoughts and emotions of Bhima. All other characters are second to Bhima, including Yudhishtira, Arjuna and Lord Krishna. The novel shows how Bhima is been sidelined all along. Heis the one who almost always brings victory to the Pandavas. Yet, he never have the fruits of his success, as his turn is the second. The story deviates from the traditional Mahabharata story story as it avoids the divine elements of the ancient epic and re-represents the characters and events realistically. No doubt, Randamoozham is a very good read for all those who wish to see a different perspective about Mahabharata.
